Your HVAC system is comprised of many parts and devices that provide heating, ventilation, and cooling for your Indianapolis home. According to the Energy Star program, the HVAC system is responsible for nearly half of the average home’s energy use. So, there’s plenty of incentive to devise an energy savings plan and keep more money in your wallet.
Heating System
Most households in the Indianapolis area use gas furnaces for home heating. If this is the case in your home, you want to be sure your furnace is operating safely and efficiently.
Your HVAC technician runs scores of checks, tests, and cleans components. Have you scheduled your fall furnace maintenance yet? Schedule early, beat the seasonal rush, or even sign up for a maintenance plan.
Ventilation and Airflow
Your air ducts bear the burden of providing a clear channel for conditioned airflow to reach the rooms of your home. It may seem like a simple enough task, but a few air leaks here, a few obstructions there, and soon you’re wasting a substantial portion of your energy dollars.
- Turn on your forced-air system and check for leaky ducts by feeling and listening for airflow and rattling at duct joints.
- Wrap loose and leaky ducts with heat-resistant foil tape. Use mastic paste first for an air-tight seal.
- Feel for balanced air pressure from the supply vents. If airflow pressure is unbalanced, you may have a duct sizing problem on your hands.
- Check your air filter every month. A dirty filter wastes energy and lends to poor indoor-air quality.
Air Conditioning
Whether you use a heat pump or central A/C for cooling, the coils should be cleaned twice a year. The coils are practically magnets for dirt and debris. You can pick up a can of foaming, disinfectant, and self-rinsing coil cleaner at your local home store.
Spray the coils liberally with the foam, and watch the dirt and grime drip away. Clean coils allows for more efficient heat exchange, which saves energy.
