Different people feel temperature in different ways. You may be perfectly comfortable while someone else in the house is shivering. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of personal preference, but there are also a number of legitimate medical reasons why some people feel colder than others. Here are some of them, as well as ways to keep your more vulnerable household members comfortable.
Reasons for Feeling Cold
One of the major factors in how cold we feel is age. As we get older, it’s more difficult for our bodies to regulate temperature. Certain medical issues can be a factor in temperature regulation as well, such as diabetes, thyroid problems, iron deficiency, and even dehydration. That’s why it’s important to accommodate vulnerable household members when it comes to temperature.
It’s sometimes thought that thinner blood makes you feel colder, but there’s no evidence of that. Rather, it’s poor circulation that impacts temperature regulation. This also means taller people often feel colder than shorter people, as their blood has to travel farther.
Finally, muscle mass contributes to how you feel temperature. More muscle means better metabolism and more insulation, both of which help keep you warm. Thus, vulnerable household members who have difficulty building muscle mass may feel colder.
What to Do
How do you keep vulnerable household members comfortable, even with differences in temperature regulation? A space heater can be effective. They can turn it on in one area of the house and keep themselves warm. However, space heaters also use extra energy and should never be used overnight.
A better option is to install a zoning system. By putting a thermostat in each room, a person can choose how hot or cold they want it without affecting those in the rest of the house. Furthermore, zoning actually reduces your energy bills rather than raising them. It’s a bigger upfront investment, but it’s worth it in the end to protect your family members who need a bit of extra warmth.
