You spend a great deal of time in your home, and for many people, it’s the place they spend the most time. Your home should be a place of comfort and relaxation, and a part of that is the air you breathe. You want your home’s HVAC system to provide you with clean, breathable air. However, many factors can affect your home’s indoor air quality. One factor that can be easy to overlook is your home’s air filters. The type of filters you use in your HVAC system can have a large impact on the quality of the air you breathe.

Different Types of Air Filters

When looking to improve your home’s air quality, the following types of air filters can help.

  • HEPA filters. These filters are designed to trap airborne particles. While often used in professional settings such as labs, HEPA filters can also be used in your home. Trapping up to 99.97% of particles passing through these filters can help remove airborne irritants such as dust, mold, and pollen.
  • Pleated electrostatic filters. These filters are made from charged materials that help pull airborne particles from the air and into the filter. This makes pleated filters more effective than traditional filters due to the more-efficient removal of particles such as allergens, bacteria, smoke, and other irritants.
  • Pre-filters. Another way to improve your home’s air quality is to install pre-filters in your HVAC system. Pre-filters are installed before your main HVAC filter and serve to trap larger particles (such as hair or dust) before they reach the main filter. This allows the main filter to be more efficient at trapping smaller, more harmful particles.
