With summer poised to take over in the Indianapolis area, hot and humid weather is not far off. High humidity can cause mold and mildew in many homes, and if you suffer from spring and summer allergies, a whole-house dehumidifier can make a big difference.
Not every home needs a whole-home dehumidifier necessarily, but if you’re prone to allergy or asthma symptoms, or if you’ve noticed signs of excess moisture in your home, it’s an option well worth considering. Common signs of overly damp air include:
- A stuffy feeling in your home
- Water stains on ceilings and walls
- Musty smells
- Visible mold and mildew
- Rotting wood
- Condensation on windows
- Exacerbated allergy or asthma symptoms
Most experts agree that the ideal home humidity level is somewhere between 30 and 50 percent, but many Indianapolis homes can see much higher levels in summer. A dehumidifier can lower humidity to the optimal level, reduce problems caused by moisture, boost air quality and help manage your allergy symptoms. There are a lot of different types and models to consider, and whole-house dehumidifiers offer several benefits over portable models.
- A whole-house dehumidifier works with your central HVAC to remove moisture from the air and redistribute dehumidified air back into your living space. Once it’s been professionally installed, it runs automatically to reduce moisture when necessary.
- As their name suggests, whole-house dehumidifiers dehumidify the air through your entire home. A portable dehumidifier has a much smaller capacity, and can usually only reduce humidity in a single room or level.
- While portable dehumidifiers must be emptied of water periodically as they collect it from the air, whole-house models divert water outside your house and don’t need to be emptied.
