Winter is coming, and with it increased heating costs as you switch from cooling your Indianapolis home to heating it. One way to help save on your energy bills is by resetting the programmable thermostat. With a few changes to your home’s thermostat settings, you can save significantly on your overall energy costs when winter hits.
Changing the Thermostat Based on Your Needs
Your programmable thermostat can be set to different setting based on your needs, a doing so can significantly improve your energy bills. Some times when you can adjust your temperature include:
- Times when you are sleeping
- Times when you are at work
- Times when you are away for an extended period for other reasons
By lowering your temperature setting by 10 to 15 degrees when you are out of the house or sleeping, you will use much less energy, all without sacrificing your comfort.
Choosing the Right Comfort Temperature
Perhaps you are already using your programmable thermostat, but have it set for the summer months. Resetting the programmable thermostat in the fall is a wise choice. The Department of Energy recommends a comfort setting of 68 degrees in the fall and winter months. While this may sound cool, remember that you can add more layers of clothing to warm up a bit. By lowering your temperature just a little, you will save big on your energy bills.
