There are plenty of reasons why your heating or cooling system might not work properly. However, a surprisingly common — and commonly overlooked — culprit could be your thermostat. It’s not unusual for the thermostat to be at the root of your HVAC system problems and these problems can often be solved with a thermostat replacement.
Here are a few ways you can check your thermostat and find out if you need a replacement. The following steps are useful if the thermostat does not appear to be receiving power:
Take a look at the thermostat’s display panel. If the display is distorted or reads blank, remove the thermostat from its wall mount and replace the battery.
If the thermostat remains nonfunctional, make sure the HVAC system hasn’t tripped its circuit breaker.
Inspect the thermostat wiring. Tighten all loose terminals and use a pencil eraser or fine sandpaper to remove corrosion from the wires and terminals.
If you can get the thermostat powered up but can’t get the HVAC system to respond, you’ll need to follow these steps:
- Check the thermostat’s current settings. Depending on the season, you’ll want it set to “heat” or “cool.” Make sure the fan is set to “auto.”
- Raise or lower the temperature setting by five degrees above or below the current room temperature.
- When adjusting the temperature, listen carefully for a click coming from the thermostat, as well as the furnace or air conditioner. If there’s no click, then there’s a good chance the thermostat has failed.
