How Can You Prepare Your Home's HVAC for Your Summer Vacation?Getting away for summer vacation is a great way to unwind, but sometimes the preparations can be as stressful as the work and obligations we’re hoping to leave behind. Here’s some helpful information on how to prepare your home for your departure, with special focus on the HVAC system.

HVAC Preparations for Summer Vacation

  1. Change your air conditioner filter, so it’ll be nice and clean all the time you’re away. A clean filter is the single most important thing you can do to ensure your HVAC system runs right. A dirty filter will cause the air flow to slow down.
  2. Call for spring preventative maintenance. You should be doing this every spring anyway, but it’s particularly important if you’re planning to go away. Make sure all systems are go before you depart, to avoid unpleasant surprises when you return. An HVAC technician will catch little problems before they become big problems, preventing breakdowns while you’re away.
  3. If you don’t have a Wi-Fi thermostat to alert you to problems with the HVAC, arrange to have someone check on your home regularly to make sure the air conditioner is running and the home is cool. Leave the name of your HVAC tech with your friend so he or she can call them in an emergency, or give instructions to notify you directly with any problems.
  4. Install a Wi-Fi thermostat. These smart devices help you monitor temperatures from afar, so you can adjust as needed in your home. They can also alert you to system malfunctions.
  5. While it’s fine to adjust the thermostat up or down 5 degrees or so while you’re away, don’t adjust more than that. Your A/C needs to run regularly to remove humidity.
  6. Check the air flow. Indoors or out, your system shouldn’t be blocked or it won’t do its job properly. Check around the outdoor condenser unit for leaves, debris or other obstructions and make sure all vents indoors are free and clear.
