Keep Your Thermostat at 65 Degrees
The first defense you have against frozen pipes is to simply keep them warm by running your heating equipment on a regular basis. Setting your thermostat above 65 degrees Fahrenheit should definitely do the trick.
Check Pipes for Any Cracks
Any cracks in your home’s pipes will obviously make them more susceptible to bursting, but this is a lot worse when the weather turns cold. Check all of your pipes for cracks and get them fixed right away.
Turn Off the Water While You’re on Vacation
The last thing you want to deal with when returning home from a holiday vacation is a burst pipe, because the ramifications from that would be catastrophic. If you’re going to leave for more than a day or two, be sure to shut off the main water valve just to be safe.
Create a Drip During Frigid Nights
On especially cold nights, water inside your pipes can freeze and cause them to burst without warning. Keeping the water flowing by creating small drips in a few faucets will help prevent that from happening by not allowing the water to stop flowing long enough to freeze.
Insulate Any Exposed Pipes
Exposed pipes around your home are especially vulnerable to outside temperatures over the winter season. You can protect these pipes by insulating them with special sleeves designed for the task, which you can pick up at your local home improvement store.
