You’re all set for back-to-school madness are far as your kids are concerned, but have you given any thought as to how you’re going to prepare your home? That’s right – just like making sure the little tikes are prepared with notebooks, backpacks, and lunch tickets, it’s time to focus on the maintenance needs of your house.
Here’s what you should do:
Call a Technician for Annual Maintenance
Each year, you should hire a professional HVAC technician to conduct a check-up of your cooling and heating systems. Since you’ll be needing your heating equipment soon, this is what you should concentrate on. Annual maintenance will keep your system efficient and prolong its operational life.
Switch Out the Air Filters
Air filters keep contaminants from being distributed throughout your home. It doesn’t take long for them to fill up, which will negatively affect your system’s efficiency. The filter should be switched out every 1-3 months, depending on the amount of debris in your air. If it’s been a while, or if it’s looks dirty, switch it out for a new one.
Clean Up the Outdoor Unit
While you were laying out in the sun and catching some rays over the summer, your outdoor unit was sitting around collecting dirt and debris. This can hurt its performance and could lead to more serious problems. The back-to-school period is the perfect time to clear off any debris – or nests – that has collected and use a hose to spray it down.
Seal Duct Leaks
Over time, the ductwork that distributes air throughout your home will develop holes and tears that will cause leaks. This will negatively affect your system’s efficiency as it will be forced to work harder. Sealing these leaks is a must, but if it’s severe, replacement may be needed.
