spring AC checksBefore you know it, you’ll need to start using your air conditioner to cool your Indianapolis home. This is a good time to make sure that your HVAC system is in good shape and ready to provide you with dependable cooling all spring and summer. You should do the following spring AC checks before you use your system this season.

Replace the Air Filter

If you’ve had the same air filter in your HVAC system for months, it’s time to change it. Your air filter gets dusty and dirty, which reduces the indoor air quality in your home. Running your AC with a dirty air filter also causes your HVAC system to operate less efficiently, resulting in higher cooling bills and more of a chance that you’ll need repairs. Put in a brand-new air filter as part of your routine when preparing your AC for the cooling season.

Wipe Return Grills and Vents

Vents and return grills can get dusty over time, which also affects your indoor air quality. When these parts of your home are dusty, this can make it harder for air to flow through them, which raises the risk of damage to your HVAC system.

Clean Around the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit of your HVAC system won’t be able to run efficiently if it has weeds or other vegetation growing around it. Clear away branches, leaves, and other debris from around the unit before using it. You should have at least a couple of feet of clear space on all sides of your outdoor unit.

Test Your AC

Before using your AC this season, turn it on to see if it works. You should have cool air blowing out of your vents when you put your AC on. If warm air is coming out or if your AC won’t come on, you’ll need to have it checked (and possibly repaired) so that it will work reliably throughout the spring and summer.
