There’s no telling how long people have been trying to invent things to keep them more comfortable. What we do know is when modern heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) came about — and it’s quite an interesting story. If you can spare a little time and want to learn a thing or two about the history of HVAC, read on!

History of HVAC: Cool Entire Cities?

The first stop in the history of HVAC is the 1840s. A Florida physician and inventor came up with the notion that perhaps he could invent a machine that could cool entire cities. At the root of his idea was his desire to keep hospital patients more comfortable and possibly stave off malaria with cooler environments.

So, he designed a machine that could make ice by using compression, and he was granted a patent. However, his dream of cooling entire cities would not be realized for another 100 years.

History of HVAC: The First Modern Air Conditioner

In 1902, engineer Willis Carrier invented a machine that is considered the first modern air conditioner. The machine could control indoor humidity and temperature. Over the next two decades, air conditioning was introduced in public buildings, entertainment venues, and in some businesses.

History of HVAC: Air Conditioning Reaches Millions

From the 1940s through the 1960s, residential air conditioning went from being used in thousands of households to being the way of life in millions of households. In fact, since the 1960s, most new home construction includes central HVAC systems, with 87% of households using HVAC today.

Over the years, HVAC systems were designed to be more energy efficient. Today, HVAC systems are found in practically every facet of life, and indoor climate control is required for our way of living.

Modern residential HVAC systems use safer refrigerants that offer better efficiency. Indoor air-quality systems, such as whole-home air purifiers, use HVAC ductwork to help keep indoor air quality clean and safe. The history of HVAC sure can be interesting, but your HVAC system running efficiently today is what’s most important.
