Google has officially announced it will end support for its first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats starting October 25, 2025. This change affects devices originally released in 2011, 2012, and the European model from 2014.
What Does This Mean for Nest Thermostat Owners?
After October 25, affected thermostats will:
- No longer receive software updates
- Lose access to the Google Home and Nest apps
- Lose integration with Google Assistant and other smart features
However, manual control on the device will still work—so you can still adjust temperature and schedules directly on the thermostat.
You can read the full announcement from Google here.
Why Is Google Ending Support?
According to Google, the decision is due to the aging hardware in these older devices. They’re shifting focus to newer models that support modern features and tighter smart home integration. Read more in the coverage from The Verge.
Upgrade Options and Discounts
To ease the transition, Google is offering discounts on newer models:
- In the U.S., customers can get $130 off the latest Nest Learning Thermostat (making it $149.99).
- In Canada, the discount is $160 CAD.
- In Europe, Google is offering 50% off the Tado Smart Thermostat X.
What Should Homeowners Do?
If you’re using a first- or second-gen Nest, consider:
- Whether you rely on app or voice control features
- How losing those integrations will affect your comfort and convenience
- Upgrading now while discounts are available
