1. What Size AC System Do I Really Need?
Bigger isn’t always better. A unit that’s too large can short-cycle and wear out faster, while one that’s too small won’t keep up on 90° days. A licensed HVAC tech should do a Manual J load calculation to determine the right size based on your home’s square footage, insulation, windows, and more.
2. How Energy Efficient Is It?
Look for the SEER2 rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The higher the number, the more energy savings you’ll see over time. In Indiana, most homes do well with a SEER2 rating of 14.3 or higher—but your installer should walk you through your options.
3. What’s the Total Installed Cost (Not Just the Unit)?
An AC system isn’t plug-and-play. You’ll want to know:
- Labor costs
- Permits
- New ductwork or upgrades (if needed)
- Warranty coverage
Ask for a clear, line-item quote so there are no surprises.
4. Is My Ductwork in Good Shape?
Even the best AC system will underperform if your ductwork is leaking or improperly sized. Ask your contractor to inspect your ducts—and don’t skip this step if your home is more than 15 years old.
5. What Kind of Thermostat Works with It?
Not every AC system plays nice with smart thermostats. Ask if your new system is compatible with models like Nest, ecobee, or your preferred brand—and if it supports zoning or remote access.
6. How Loud Will It Be?
Some newer systems are ultra-quiet, while others hum like a lawnmower. If noise matters to you (say, near a bedroom or patio), ask about decibel levels and where the outdoor unit will be placed.
7. What’s the Warranty and Maintenance Plan?
A good system should come with a solid manufacturer warranty—usually 10 years if registered. But just as important: does your installer offer a maintenance plan to keep things running smoothly year after year?
