Winter Month Energy Saving TipsWinter temperatures in the Indianapolis area mean that your furnace or heating system will be working hard to keep you warm. This can result in a steep increase in your energy bills this season, but there are ways to prevent this from happening.

Keep the following tips on energy savings in mind while heating your home this winter.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

Adjusting your thermostat during certain times, such as when you’re not home or when you’ll be asleep, can save you a lot of money on your energy bills. However, remembering to do this can be difficult. A programmable thermostat can adjust the temperature setting for you, so that you don’t have to worry about forgetting to do it. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat for your home, consider switching to one for considerable energy savings.

Seal Air Leaks

Check for air leaks around your home, and seal these up to prevent heat loss. Common areas that have leaks include doors and windows. Look for gaps or cracks in these areas, and use caulk or weatherstripping to close them up. This helps keep heated air inside while stopping cold outdoor air from getting in.

Change the Air Filter

The air filter in your heating system helps it run efficiently. Replace the filter every month or so to ensure that your heating system is able to work as efficiently as possible. This reduces the amount of energy you use heating your home throughout winter while also decreasing wear and tear on your HVAC system.

Schedule Maintenance

Routine heating system maintenance can lead to significant energy savings in your home. Having maintenance done involves checking for problems that could impact your HVAC system’s energy efficiency. When you have maintenance done regularly, your heating system will be able to provide you with plenty of heat without running more than necessary. This results in energy bills that are much lower.
