When it’s hot outside and you go to use your air conditioner, only to find that it won’t turn on, you have an emergency on your hand. Here are some common reasons why this may happen, and what you can do about them.
Air Conditioner Won’t Turn On? Try This First
If your air conditioner will not turn on, here’s what you should check.
- Check the thermostat. If the thermostat was switched to heating or is set too warm, the unit won’t turn on. Also, if the battery is low, you’ll have problems.
- External wiring problems. If an animal has chewed on or otherwise damaged a wire, it won’t turn on. Check those wires you can see to determine if there’s a problem.
- Blown fuse. If you have a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker, reset the power in your home and see if that fixes the problem. If it continues to trip, call for professional service, because you may have an electrical problem.
- Dirty air filter. If the air filter is dirty and air can’t flow, the A/C might freeze up.
These three problems fix most instances of an air conditioner that won’t turn on. Try them first before you call for service.
Additional Problems That Cause a System Not to Turn On
If you have checked these things and not found the problem, then you may have a more serious issue. For instance, if the air conditioning coolant has leaked out of the unit, it will stop turning on. An HVAC technician can check for this and refill the coolant to restore function.
