A programmable thermostat not only makes your life easier, it can reduce your energy bill by 10 percent or more. By controlling the hours during which you heat or cool your home, you will not only save money, but reduce your carbon footprint, as well. By know just a few helping tips, you can select, install and use your programmable thermostat to maximize your energy savings.

Selecting a programmable thermostat

Programmable thermostats can come with a variety of features, such as touch pads, voice activation, or warning indicators to let you know when it’s time for service or a filter change. Aside from those options, the main consideration when selecting your thermostat is the schedule of you and your loved ones. Here are the most common models:

  • 7-day model: This type is ideal for families that have a different schedule each day of the week.
  • 5+2 model: This type enables you to set one schedule during the week and a different one on the weekends.
  • 5+1+1 model: This model is for households that have a consistent schedule Monday to Friday, with changes on both Saturday and Sunday.

Installing your programmable thermostat

When you prepare to install your programmable thermostat, it’s all about location and convenience. Select a spot that is easy to get to for initial programming, and any subsequent changes. Next, be sure the thermostat is in an area away from drafts, or direct sunlight, which can lead to inaccurate temperature readings.

Programming your new thermostat

With your family schedule in hand, set your thermostat to reflect the times that you are sleeping, awake or away for more than four hours at a stretch. Most programmable thermostats allow for at least four time zones per day, allowing you greater flexibility. You also may want to allow 15 to 30 minutes for your home to heat or cool prior to getting up in the morning or getting home in the evening.
