How Your HVAC System Parts Work TogetherModern heating and cooling systems use multiple components working together to provide an acceptable comfort level for your home. The various parts must interact smoothly to maintain the energy efficiency of the HVAC system. It is helpful for the homeowner to understand how the system’s various components works together.

The ductwork in your home carries conditioned warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer months. The furnace and air conditioner are interconnected to allow this to happen. The supply ducts carry the heated or cooled air throughout your home, and return ducts bring stale air back to the HVAC equipment to be filtered and reconditioned. A blower fan is used in a forced-air system to distribute cold and warm air through the ductwork, and to blow air across the evaporator coil in an A/C or heat pump system.

The air filter is also used throughout the year to improve indoor air quality and protect the mechanical components that need to do double-duty operating during both warm and cold months. This increases the importance of inspecting and changing the air filter regularly.

When considering replacing your HVAC system, a professional should be consulted to evaluate your living space and recommend any changes necessary to ensure the new system can provide an acceptable comfort level while maintaining energy efficiency. Installing a cooling or heating system that is too big for your living space should be avoided. It will waste energy, won’t provide even cooling or heating, will stress parts through frequent cycling, and won’t provide adequate filtration or humidity control. A system that’s too small will struggle to cool or heat your home during the hottest and coldest days.

Regular maintenance of residential HVAC systems is all the more important because of the increased year-round wear on shared components of cooling and heating equipment. Timely maintenance can help prevent costly future repairs and keep your HVAC system operating smoothly at a reasonable cost.
