If you have a space in your home that’s difficult to heat or cool, or if you are planning a remodeling project or addition, consider a ductless mini split to condition it. These are heat pumps that don’t require any ductwork, offering you a number of advantages over central HVAC systems. Among the benefits:
- Ductless mini splits are easier to install, since they don’t need ducts. These systems have two primary components – an outdoor condenser/compressor and one or more indoor air handlers. A flexible conduit connects them and contains the refrigerant, vacuum line, drainpipe and power source. Once the outdoor unit has been placed, the HVAC technician drills a small hole through the exterior wall to connect the air handler to the condenser. The refrigerant has been filled by the manufacturer, eliminating this crucial step at your home. The air handlers sit on the floor or hang from walls or the ceiling.
- These systems have to meet the same energy-efficiency standards that heat pumps do. The minimum SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is 13, and the HSPF (heating season performance factor) must be at least 7.7. Since the air handler blows the air directly into a space, no conditioned air losses occur due to air leaks or thermal losses in uninsulated ducts, which can be substantial in a regular ducted HVAC system.
- These systems offer flexibility. The air handler can be placed unobtrusively in a room, and a condenser can support up to four air handlers, which you can add as you need them. This allows for independent temperature control in separate zones or rooms in your home, satisfying the different preferences of residents and allowing you to choose which areas to heat and cool. This is another way that a ductless mini split can save you money on energy bills.
- Safety with a ductless mini-split is high, since they use electricity rather than combustible fuels for heating. The access hole for the conduit is too small for would-be intruders to enter your home.
