If your air conditioner is getting up there in age, you’re probably wondering how much longer it will last — and when you’ll be hit with the next repair bill. Knowing when to repair or replace an aging system is a tricky proposition, one that often requires the help of an expert.
If you suspect that you’ll need to replace your air conditioner soon, use these surefire signs to help you decide:
- High energy bills often indicate that the internal components of the A/C can no longer get the job done. Over time, even a well-cared-for air conditioner will succumb to dirt buildup and wear and tear, which cause the unit to consume more energy to operate.
- Poor cooling often means the coils are failing. The indoor coils are responsible for absorbing heat from the air inside your home, the process that results in air conditioning. If they are ripe with dirt or corroding, they will lose not only efficiency, but their capacity to cool your home will also greatly decrease.
- Humid or stuffy air is often a sign that your air conditioner isn’t working at its peak anymore. As dirt buildup slows down the function of the air handler, less air will move through your home, leaving you with stagnant, stale air. Further, all of the components within the A/C must function smoothly in order for the system to remove moisture or humidity from the air.
- If you’ve failed to have your air conditioner maintained every year, the aging process will be hastened, and you’ll likely have to replace or repair your unit sooner.
Often, it’s wiser to invest your money in a newer, more efficient system, instead of a repair. Repairing an inefficient system may seem like a good move for the short-term, but in the long run, you’ll be left with an aging system — and one that might require an additional repair or two, high energy bills, and an A/C that can’t adequately cool your home.
